Until
1956 the Huaorani people made their homes for centuries
in the northeastern Amazon basin of Ecuador without contact from
the outside world. This remote territory inhabited by people once
only known of through traditional songs contains some of the last
remaining virgin Amazon rainforest in Ecuador. By visiting the Huaorani
we will explore the ways of the people and the natural beauty and
diversity of the flora and fauna of the rainforest.
Our days are filled with exploration of the jungle and its inhabitants.
Lead by an English speaking interpretative guide, and Huaorani guides
we are introduced into the local community and the flora and fauna
of the area. The Huaorani welcome us into their homes and share
with us their beliefs and way of life. We will see their building
techniques, learn to make palm leaf bags and other household items
from the plants of the jungle and even learn how to use a blowgun.
Camping in tents and traditional huts, our expedition makes available
part of an area of outstanding natural beauty and diversity, while
making a minimal impact on the environment and culture. By creating
responsible tourism in this area we are generating an alternative
source of revenue to the Huaorani. Encouraging them to continue
to live the lifestyle of their choice and preserve the rainforest
where they live.
Within the region there are wildlife preserves where the Huaorani
have decided not to hunt in order to protect and maintain the animals
and birds native to the area. We set out by canoe and by foot to
seek a glimpse of the monkeys, tapirs, pumas, river otters, caimans,
capybaras, river and land turtles and other animals that make this
region their home. A bird-lover’s paradise estimates reach
350 species including harpy eagles, condors, hoatzins, toucans,
woodpeckers, kingfishers, herons, and parrots.
Our journey will be filled with the sights, sounds and smells of
the rainforest. Whether visiting the Huaorani, watching the wildlife
or spending a lazy afternoon swimming with Piranhas a visit to the
Huaorani territory is a once in a lifetime experience.
