Chimborazo Guide

Chimborazo 6,310 m ( 20,702 ft)

The highest mountain in Ecuador being Chimborazo is an attraction due to its altitude , which also can prepare us for future higher peaks in South America. The normal routes start southwest making approximately an eight hour approach to the summit, it is technically difficult so experience is required. There are four main summits from the west such as Veintimilla (6,267m/ 20,561ft), Whymper (6,310 m / 20,702ft) , Politecnica (5,820 m / 19,094 ft) and Nicolas Martinez (5,570 m / 18274 ft).

Leaving from Quito it is approx. 4 hour drive to the refuge located at 4800 m / (15,750ft ) from there it is a 30 minute walk to the higher refuge known as Whymper (5,000 m/ 16,400 ft)  where we will prepare ourselves for this challenging climb.  After dinner at the refuge the group rests until midnight, when the climbers leave the refuge. The objective is to be at the summit early morning  and off the snow before noon, when it starts to soften up again and becomes dangerous.

To summit Chimborazo  you need to be in good health, fit, have good technical skill and most importantly acclimatized.  Acclimatization typically requires about 6 days hiking  above Quito's altitude and 2 or 3 peaks first. Climb Chimborazo as part of our Climb High 10-day itinerary or after attending our Glacier Climbing School on Cayambe.
