Savages
by Joe Kane 1995 Knopf Publishing
In this impressive, funny and moving work, Joe Kane tells the story
of the Huaorani, a tribe living in the deepest part of the Amazonian
rainforest in Ecuador. The Huaorani have only in the last generation
been exposed to such items as the wristwatch. But the modern world
is reaching them quickly; for better or worse--usually worse--they
live astride some of Ecuador's richest oilfields. Oil production
in the Amazon has opened the forest to colonization and industrialization,
often with alarming results: about 17 million gallons, of raw crude,
more than in the Valdez spill in Alaska, were spilled from a Amazon
pipeline between 1972 and 1989. Kane, who lived with the Huaorani
for months, immaculately reports on the tribes' connections with
the old world and its battles with the new one.

Birding
A Guide to the Birds of the Galapagos Islands by Isabel Castro
and Antonia Phillips (Contributor) 1997
Book Description: Made famous by Charles Darwin's
work on evolution and speciation, the Galapagos Islands contain
an extraordinary wildlife that attracts thousands of visitors today.
Those tourists who wish to concentrate on the birdlife now have
A Guide to the Birds of the The Galapagos Islands, which offers
unprecedented comprehensive coverage. This field guide presents
every species to have been recorded within the archipelago, including
accidentals and vagrants. Twenty- eight color plates illustrate
the species, while four color plates show the key island habitats,
with typical bird species for each also depicted. Beautiful line
drawings, often showing interesting aspects of bird behavior, complement
a concise, accessible, and informative text. The book describes
the morphological aspects that make it possible to identify the
birds in the field, and also explains the natural history of the
species that are resident to the Islands. An introduction offers
information on the weather, topography, and evolution of the Islands
and their birdlife. With this guide, all visitors, experts and beginners,
will be able to identify and appreciate any species within the unique
avifauna of the the Galapagos Islands.

Galapagos:
Islands of Change by Lynne Born Myers, Christopher A. Myers (Contributor),
Nat Han Farb (Illustrator), Nathan Farb (Photographer) 1995
Spectacular photography and clear, concise text reveal the fascinating
story of the Galapagos--the formation of the islands, how they came
to be inhabited, and the amazing evolutionary changes taking place
there. Difficult concepts, such as plate tectonics and Darwin's
theory of evolution, are explained in simple-to-understand terms
and accompanied by appropriate examples. Visual learners will benefit
from the book's appealing layout, which presents small doses of
text surrounded by captioned color photographs, small diagrams,
and maps. Covering subjects as varied as volcanoes, plant and animal
life, evolution, erosion, and human exploitation of the environment,
this will be a useful research tool as well as a rich supplement
for the science curriculum. A glossary is appended. Lauren Peterson

in the Andes by Enrique Aguilar M. (Photographer), Estefania Rivas
(Illustrator), Maria Jose Ayala (Illustrator), Jose Paul Aguilar
(Editor), Rita Besana (Translator)
Book Description: Awakening in the Andes is a
book that shows through 120 beautiful photographs the charming landscapes
of the Andean world, such as the shining high barren plains and
the skies covered by whimsical clouds that subtly hide some of its
most beautiful mountains. This book shows the faces of the dwellers
of these plains and mountains; their customs, traditions, festivities,
as well as their temples of cult and worship. It is a journey of
tragedy and virtue; a walk across time and cultures in the mist
of music, color, religion and magical syncretism. It is a journey
across myths, beliefs, legends and hope.
