Hiking in the Andes
Tigua: Only recently accepting of outsiders, the Indians of this remote valley live a traditional life style, farming spectacular, almost vertical fields and traveling once a week into one of the local markets, to trade their produce hike through an area that would have looked the same as thousands of years ago.

We hike on the western cordillera of the Andes where the villages of the Tigua region have been passed by time. Inhabited by the indigenous descendants of the Panzaleo tribe, it is everything that you would expect of the high Andes - small villages, vertical fields and friendly and easygoing lifestyle.
Tigua art
This area is becoming famous both for the naïf paintings that are typical of the region and also the traditional carved animal masks.

Hike: Easy to moderate
Distance: 36 kilometers

Cotopaxi: The spectacular lajars and bolder fields that surround the active volcano of Cotopaxi enable the hiker to travel the high paramo, camp at night, and savor the mountains while crossing this recently formed volcanic landscape.

In the skirts of the worlds highest active volcano there is the opportunity for hiking from 1 to 5 days. To the south, remote rolling countryside, to the east and north flat lahars at about 4000 meters above sea level are dominated by Cotopaxi. This is a great area to combine a hiking trip with mountain biking. Because of Cotopaxi's location towards the center of the Avenue of the Volcanoes, the weather tends to be quite fine year round, but the driest times of year are June to August and then December and January.

Hike: Easy to hard depending on the route.

Distance: From 1 to 40 kilometers

The Condor Trek: Hiking up through the Antisana park the trail takes you across the grasslands of the high paramos, where you are more likely to see the
Andean Condor and the Mountain Wolf than you are to see other travelers and comes out on the eastern edge of the Cotopaxi National Park.

4 to 5 days hiking from Papallacta via Antisana to Cotopaxi (or in reverse) crossing the high paramo, camping but with pack horses to carry the luggage, will give a lasting impression of the wilderness of the high Andes and the opportunity to see the Andean condor as well as many other of the endemic birds of the Andes.

Hike: Moderate
Distance: 40 kilometers

Oyacachi Hike: Hiiking from the High Andes to the Amazon basin this trail follows an ancient trade route, along the valley of the river Oyacachi going from paramo, through the cloud forests and into the rainforest of the Amazon.

An amazing 5 day river valley hike, from the Andes to the Amazon. Camping at night and with pack horses for a couple of days we machete our way along a 1000 year old trade route. This route is only possible from November to March, during the dry season
