Guayaquil & the Southern Coast

Malecón 2000
Guayaquil´s riverside avenue parallels the brown Rio Guayas for the entire length of the city center. Malecón 2000, a monumental undertaking that has given the whole town a complete facelift: the 2.5 Kilometer pedestrian walkway now spotless and well-guarded, has been extended over the river and decorated with fountains, bridges and modern sculptures. shopping centers, crafts markets, restaurants, movie theaters and an ecological park.
Parque de las Iguanas
Not the biggest, but certainly the most interesting, park in Guayaquil, this pleasent plaza is presided over by a monument to Bolivar shaded by 30-meter trees. Almost tame reptiles slither down out of the branches to snap up lettuce and other goodies left by hotel workers around noon each day. Kids especially love the iguanas, squealing as the reptiles joust for scrapsand stride down the paths like they own the place. Look carefully, and you might also spot a sloth among the leaves. a fish pond with dozens of turtles and a red squirrel (which can be tempted by patience and grapes) complete the menagerie.
Manglares Churute - Ecological Reserve
This coastal reseve 45 Kilometers south of Guayaquil safeguards 50.000 hectares of mangroves from the ravage of shrimp farming. The tangled plants cover 67 percent of the park's area, along with the surronding salt flats provide shelter for a wide range of shorebirds, such as laughing gulls, roseate spoonbills, ospreys, herons, egrets, and ibis.
Manglares Churute is one of the few places in Ecuador to see Horned screemers. inland streches of dry tropical forrest in the coastal Cordillera de Churute shelter white fronted capuchin and mantled howler monkeys, along with the ocacasional agouti, tigrillo and armadillo.

Jambelí

facing the Golfo fe Guayaquil from the nothern tip of the Archipielago de Jambeli, this beach resot becomes crammed with Machalas hard-working residents during the weekends and holidays. The mangroves and palm trees make it an agreeable spot to stick your toes in the sand. Jambeli is almoast deserted midweek when youl have it pretty much to yourself. There aren't any cars, and electricity and hot water are not that dependable but thats part of the charm of the place.

Zaruma

Spanish King Felipe II decreed the establisment of this town to serve as a base for gold extraction, with its narrow streets and charming wooden houses, this remote town is one of the prettier places in the southern half of the country, thermal springs, orchid gardens in the nearby hill, the best coffee in Ecuador is freshly roasted are all available in this little hidden treasure.
